Over the past thirty years, nonprofits large and small have sought to balance shifts and declines in their traditional funding streams--foundation funds, government grants, individual contributions, and fees for services.

Although these sources continue to play an important role in nonprofit financial support, the changing global economy, fluctuating financial markets, and growing government deficits are forcing organizations to pursue new and creative strategies to fund their activities. Increasingly, nonprofit managers and boards are exploring the prospect of launching a "nonprofit business" or "social enterprise" as a means of generating revenue and advancing the organization's mission.
